The full story
An Elecrow CrowPanel ESP32-S3 4.2" e-paper board seemed broken, with its BUSY line always high. The owner, a software engineer rather than a hardware person, spent about $65 of free Claude credits diagnosing it.
The answer: units with an undocumented green sticker use a UC8276C-class controller rather than the documented SSD1683, so drivers and docs written for the SSD1683 fail, and the factory firmware breaks it. The owner is returning it with a note telling Elecrow it is not dead hardware and asking them to document the variant.
