The full story

The maker wanted nine Amaran studio lights to work through Home Assistant scenes and controls alongside the rest of the house. Amble-home puts ESPHome firmware on an ESP32-S3 or C6 board and joins the existing Bluetooth mesh as another node.

Claude writes and maintains the code while the maker owns the design, hardware and release decisions, with Codex reviewing sensitive changes. The post reports eight tested fixture models and five tested boards. Another 72 fixtures are expected to work from capability data, rather than tested.

The Amaran app still handles pairing and provisioning. Effects, presets, gels and pixel control remain there too; Amble-home exposes ordinary lighting controls and reads back state every 15 seconds.

Device and compatibility

  • ESP32-S3 or ESP32-C6 with 8 MB flash and native USB

Classic ESP32, S2 and C3 are unsupported. Eight fixture models and five boards reported tested.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.
