The full story
An old toilet began to smell of rotten eggs when flushed, and troubleshooting with Claude pointed to bacteria in the rim jets that could not be cleaned without taking it apart, so the poster bought a smart toilet and fitted it themselves. The installation stalled at the water supply, where a braided hose on PEX pipe did not match the fittings supplied.
An hour in a DIY store describing the sizes to Claude got nowhere, because the poster was giving it the wrong information. A photo of the actual fitting solved it: Claude identified it as 1/2" FIP threaded rather than 5/8" compression, explained why the 3/8" compression braided line would not fit directly and named the adapter to look for. Five minutes later the part was found and the toilet was connected.
