The full story
The owner built a NAS in a Jonsbo N6 case with nine second-hand enterprise SAS drives, swapping an 8-port HBA for a 16-port one, adding a PCIe riser to fit it, and reformatting drives that showed up as 0 bytes because they used 520-byte sectors.
For the software they chose OpenMediaVault with SnapRAID and MergerFS, and used Claude Cowork to guide them through setting up the stack as separate Proxmox containers and virtual machines.
