A local voice assistant and touch dashboard for the M5Stack Tab5

A non-developer used AI tools including Claude to write all the ESPHome YAML and C++ for a wall panel with an on-device wake word on the ESP32-P4.

The full story

The owner, who is not a developer, wanted a responsive wall-mounted touch panel and local voice assistant for Home Assistant. Using only AI tools, Claude among them alongside Gemini and Antigravity, they had all the YAML, C++ snippets and automation scripts written for an M5Stack Tab5 running ESPHome and LVGL.

The wake word runs locally on the device so no audio leaves it until it hears "Ok Nabu", the microphone icon changes colour with the assistant's state, and a custom boot sequence delays the amplifier to stop a crackle from the speaker. The frame buffer sits in the board's PSRAM to keep the graphics smooth.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.

Privacy. No accounts. Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) only if you accept them; no ads or cross-site tracking. Searches are counted anonymously (just the words) to show what's popular, and so are clicks on Ask Claude (just the count). The Claude connector only receives the search words your Claude sends it.
