Old laptop as an always-on Ubuntu server
A guide to an old laptop as a hardened Ubuntu server: Tailscale, Cloudflare DDNS, a Cockpit dashboard, and Claude Code installed on it.
The full story
This step-by-step guide argues that an old Core i3 or i5 laptop with 16 GB of RAM makes as good a home server as a new Mac mini. It installs Ubuntu Server 24.04 with a light desktop. It adds Tailscale for private remote access, hardened SSH with Cloudflare dynamic DNS as a backup, and Cockpit as a browser dashboard. Security comes from the UFW firewall, Fail2Ban and key-only logins.
Claude Code and OpenClaw are then installed on the server, so you can run AI coding sessions on it from your phone or another laptop wherever you are. The guide is a recipe rather than a report of a finished project.
A setup guide rather than a single tested build.
